The town of Fucking in Tarsdof, Austria has finally had enough of being a joke to tourists and changed its name to Fugging. The quaint town in the north, central region of Austria, just 4km from Germany, has a small population of just over 100 people who have grown sick of tourists’ making fun of its name. The impetus for the name change comes from the residents who are keen to reduce tourist travel to the area and deter people from taking photos – or even stealing – the town’s sign.

The town’s residents, known as Fuckingers, decided jointly in a council meeting to rename the village after many years of media attention. Previous attempts to deter tourists from stealing the sign have included adding an anti-theft concrete base that did little to discourage amused visitors.

The town’s mayor, Andrea Holzner, confirmed the name change in the regional daily Oberösterreichische Nachrichten (OOeN) where she was quoted as saying: “I really don’t want to say anything more – we’ve had enough media frenzy about this in the past.”

The name change will come into effect on the 1st January 2021 and offers residents a chance at rebranding their lives. It remains to be seen whether the town will also rebrand the local craft beer ‘Fucking hell’, a name that gets its wordplay pun from the German word for pale being ‘hell’. The town’s name, which has long tickled both local and tourists alike, was also the inspiration for the 2013 movie ‘Bad Fucking’, featuring Martina Ebm, Proschat Madani and Thomas Mraz.

Folklore suggests the name came from town founder and Bavarian nobleman called Focko, who dates back to around the sixth century, although there was no official inhabitation of the village until 1070. It’s not until 1825 that records reveal a map using the spelling of ‘Fuking’ to specify the town.
